The United States has clarified that its ongoing military campaign against Iran is not expanding into a broader war, even as strikes against Iranian targets intensify.
Speaking at the headquarters of the United States Central Command, US Defense SecretaryPete Hegsethsaid the military operation, known asOperation Epic Fury, remains focused on specific strategic objectives.
Hegseth said the Pentagon’s goal is to dismantle Iran’s offensive military capabilities and prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons. According to US officials, the strikes have targeted missile systems, missile production facilities and Iranian naval forces.
While the campaign is intensifying, Hegseth emphasized that Washington is not expanding its military aims. He noted that the US is increasing its military presence in the region by deploying additional fighter squadrons, defensive systems and bomber missions to strengthen operational capabilities.
The defense secretary also said the United States is controlling the pace of the conflict. He stated that American forces have the resources required to sustain the campaign and remain prepared for continued operations.
His remarks come after US PresidentDonald Trumpsuggested that Washington could play a role in shaping Iran’s leadership after the conflict ends. Hegseth echoed the statement, indicating that the ongoing military pressure may create opportunities for political change within the country.
According to US officials, American forces have struck more than 2,000 targets in Iran over the past six days, including several Iranian naval vessels. Hegseth earlier said the conflict could last up to eight weeks, making it the longest timeline suggested by the administration so far.
