US President Donald Trump has warned that Washington may further raise tariffs on Indian imports if New Delhi does not cooperate on what he termed the “Russian oil issue,” according to media reports. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump indicated that India was eager to keep relations on track and suggested that tariff hikes could be implemented swiftly if US concerns were not addressed.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump described him as a “very good guy” who, he said, understood the US President’s dissatisfaction. “We can raise tariffs on them very quickly,” Trump remarked, according to audio recordings cited by international media.
Trump’s comments stem from India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil, a practice his administration has repeatedly criticised. The issue had earlier been cited in August 2025, when the US doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50 per cent. Trump reiterated that tariffs could be increased again if India does not cooperate with Washington on the Russian oil front.
The remarks were made during a media briefing that also referenced recent US actions in Venezuela, where oil considerations have featured prominently in military and diplomatic decisions.
The latest warning comes despite Trump’s earlier assertion that Prime Minister Modi had assured him India would halt Russian oil purchases — a claim firmly denied by New Delhi. Indian authorities have maintained that the country’s energy policies are guided by market dynamics and domestic requirements.
While Trump has previously spoken of a “special relationship” with Modi and expressed personal warmth towards India, his latest remarks risk adding fresh strain to bilateral ties. Russia remains India’s largest crude oil supplier, even as US officials argue that Moscow’s energy revenues are being used to finance the Ukraine war — an allegation India has not endorsed.
