India’s First Bullet Train to Begin Operations by August 2027, Says Railways Minister

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that India’s first high-speed bullet train service is expected to commence operations by August 15, 2027. The ambitious project marks a major milestone in the country’s railway modernisation drive and aims to significantly reduce travel time between key cities.

India’s long-awaited bullet train project is set to become operational by August 15, 2027, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday. The high-speed rail service, being developed as part of India’s infrastructure modernisation push, will initially operate on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor.

Providing an update on the project’s progress, the minister said the first operational stretch will be betweenSurat and Bilimora, followed by subsequent sections connectingVapi to Surat,Vapi to Ahmedabad, and finallyMumbai to Ahmedabad.

“The bullet train will be ready by August 15, 2027. The initial section will open from Surat to Bilimora, followed by the remaining stretches in phases,” Vaishnaw said.

Indigenous Technology at the Core

Highlighting India’s growing technological capabilities, the Railway Minister said the bullet train project is being developed using largely indigenous technology. Key systems such assuspension bogies, propulsion mechanisms, and vehicle control systemsare being designed and manufactured domestically.

“These core technologies will determine train stability, braking efficiency, speed regulation, and overall safety. All major systems are being developed indigenously,” he added.

Boost to Connectivity and Modern Rail Infrastructure

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two major economic hubs, while setting new benchmarks for safety, speed, and passenger comfort in India’s rail network.

Once operational, the bullet train is expected to transform intercity travel and mark a major leap in the country’s transportation infrastructure.
