The Odisha government has partnered with the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) to modernise the Pathani Samanta Planetarium in Bhubaneswar. Civil work has already begun, while software and technical upgrades are expected to take more time.
The project will feature a new hybrid dome system, an interactive science gallery, virtual reality-based space simulator, and an outdoor light and sound show with regularly updated content. The planetarium will remain closed for about 18 months during renovations.
In addition, the state has approved a new planetarium in Khandapada, the birthplace of astronomer Pathani Samanta, with a budget of ₹8.5 crore. These initiatives aim to create world-class astronomy education and science outreach facilities in Odisha.
