The Orissa High Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Odisha government in response to a public interest litigation seeking a CBI inquiry into alleged illegal mining activities in the state. The court has asked the government to file a comprehensive reply within two weeks, detailing the current status of illegal mining and the steps taken to curb such activities.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice M.S. Raman passed the order while hearing a PIL filed by Shravan Kumar Deb. The matter has been posted for further hearing on February 10.
In the petition, the petitioner alleged that the Odisha government has failed to take effective action against individuals and entities involved in illegal mining, despite clear directives issued by the Supreme Court in 2017. It was claimed that mining leaseholders are operating beyond approved limits and extracting minerals in excess of permitted quantities without facing punitive action.
The plea further highlighted that unchecked illegal mining has caused significant revenue losses to the state exchequer. Taking note of the allegations, the High Court has sought a detailed explanation from the state government on enforcement measures, compliance with Supreme Court directions, and actions initiated against violators.
