Odisha to Replace Diesel ‘Ama Buses’ with Electric Fleet, Introduces Women Drivers

The Odisha government will phase out diesel-powered Ama Buses and transition to an all-electric fleet, with women drivers to be trained and deployed as part of the initiative to promote clean mobility and safer public transport.

TheOdisha governmenthas announced a major shift in public transport, deciding to replace all diesel-poweredAma Buseswithelectric buses (EVs). Urban Development MinisterKrushna Chandra Mahapatraconfirmed that the transition will be phased, aiming to reduce pollution, cut fuel costs, and strengthen eco-friendly transportation across the state.

To support the move, EV infrastructure, includingcharging stations, is being strengthened to ensure smooth operation of the new fleet. In a landmark step towards women empowerment, the government will deploy women drivers for Ama Buses. In the first phase, 20 women drivers will undergo specialised heavy vehicle training in Pune and later operate dedicated bus services, including potential women-only routes.

The initiative, approved by Odisha Chief MinisterMohan Majhi, is designed to provide a safer, more comfortable commuting environment for female passengers while promotingsustainable and green mobilityacross urban and semi-urban areas.
