U.S. Revises Childhood Vaccine Guidance

OnMonday, January 5, 2026, the United States withdrew its long-standing recommendation that all children routinely receive vaccines forinfluenza and three other diseases, marking a major shift in national immunization policy. The decision aligns with long-held views ofHealth Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has advocated reducing the number of vaccines given to children.

Public health specialists have raised concerns that the change could result inavoidable illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. The revision was approved byCDC Acting Director Jim O’Neillwithout going through the agency’s traditional external advisory review process, a move that experts say bypassed important scientific scrutiny.

The updated guidance follows remarks made last month byPresident Donald Trump, who called for the U.S. to bring its vaccination schedule closer to those of other developed nations.

Kennedy, who has frequently questioned vaccine safety despite scientific consensus, has previously supported ending universal recommendations forCOVID-19 and hepatitis B vaccinesfor children. Claims linking vaccines to autism, cited in the past, have been repeatedly disproven by researchers.

Under the new policy, routine recommendations have been removed for vaccines targetingrotavirus, influenza, meningococcal disease, and hepatitis A. Instead, the guidance encourages parents to make vaccination decisions in consultation with healthcare providers through what officials describe asshared clinical decision-making.

Experts Raise Safety Concerns

Medical professionals and vaccine researchers have criticized the move, warning it could place children at greater risk.Dr. Michael Osterholmof the University of Minnesota said such a significant change should have been preceded by open discussion on its potential health consequences.

Similarly,Dr. Sean O’Learyof the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasized that comparisons with other countries overlook key differences. Many nations cited in the review operate undergovernment-funded universal healthcare systems, unlike the largely private healthcare model used in the U.S.

He stressed that decisions affecting childhood immunization should be based onscientific evidence, transparency, and established review processes, rather than simplified international comparisons.

Administration Defends Decision

The White House defended the policy change, with spokespersonKaroline Leavittstating on social media that the update allows families and doctors to make more personalized healthcare choices and could help rebuild public trust in health institutions.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the decision was informed by a review of immunization policies in20 developed countriesconducted by senior officialsMartin KulldorffandTracy Beth Hoeg, all of which operate under universal healthcare systems.
