Tension gripped the Nimapada area of Odisha’s Puri district after the body of a youth was found hanging from a tree near Dihabadi village on Tuesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Subrat Bhoi. Following the discovery of the body, hundreds of villagers gathered in front of the Nimapada police station and staged a protest while keeping the body there, demanding justice.
According to reports, Subrat Bhoi was reportedly taken for questioning by police on Monday in connection with an allegation of abducting a minor girl. Family members alleged that the youth took the extreme step after being unable to bear alleged police torture.
The deceased’s brother claimed that police had taken Subrat late at night and held an officer responsible for his death. However, the Nimapada SDPO denied the allegations, stating that the youth was never brought to the police station and that officers had not met him during the inquiry.
Police said the youth’s family had handed over the minor girl to authorities earlier and later informed them about finding Subrat hanging in a village field. Officials added that CCTV footage from the police station could verify that the youth was never in custody. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
