A science teacher was detained by police following allegations of inappropriate behaviour with a minor girl student at a government high school in Deogarh district of Odisha. A case has been registered under the POCSO Act, and an official inquiry has been ordered by the District Education Officer.

The accused teacher, identified as Tapan Kumar Mishra, was detained on Friday following a written complaint filed by the mother of a Class 8 student at the Kundheigola Police Station. Police have registered a case under Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS).

According to the complaint, the teacher allegedly behaved inappropriately with minor girl students by calling them aside during school hours. The complaint further alleged that during Valentine’s Week, the teacher discussed themes related to the occasion, asked students to bring chocolates, and even distributed chocolates to them, raising serious concerns among parents.

The matter came to light after the affected student informed her family, prompting discussions within the school’s Management Committee. Following deliberations, an FIR was lodged with the police.

Police officials stated that the teacher is currently detained and will be produced before a court after the victim’s statement is formally recorded. An investigation is underway to ascertain the full details of the allegations.
