West Bengal Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari launched a strong attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress over the Babri Masjid issue, stating that a BJP government in the state would remove all traces of Mughal rulers from public spaces. He alleged that under the Mamata Banerjee-led government, names of what he described as “foreign invaders” like Babur continue to exist across Bengal.
Adhikari declared that if the BJP comes to power in the upcoming Assembly elections, it will erase references to Mughal rulers including Babur, Humayun, Aurangzeb, Akbar, and Shah Jahan from locations across the state. He claimed these rulers were responsible for historical atrocities, forced conversions, and destruction of temples.
His remarks follow controversy triggered by former TMC leader Humayun Kabir, who announced plans to construct a ‘Babri Masjid’ in Murshidabad district. Kabir was later suspended by the TMC and formed a new political outfit, the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP).
Adhikari also referred to recent violence in Murshidabad’s Beldanga area and renewed his demand for an NIA investigation. He accused the state government of attempting to shield those involved and criticised its legal approach in higher courts. His statements are expected to intensify political debates in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections.
