Renowned Odia music composer Abhijit Majumdar passed away on Sunday at AIIMS Bhubaneswar at the age of 54. His death was confirmed by hospital authorities, who released a detailed medical statement outlining his treatment and final clinical condition.
According to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Majumdar was admitted to the institute on September 4, 2025, with multiple comorbidities including hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease. He was diagnosed with Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome affecting both pontine and extrapontine regions, along with bilateral hospital-acquired pneumonia, bloodstream infection caused by multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter, dyselectrolytaemia, and nutritional deficiencies.
Due to the severity of his illness, he remained under treatment in the Medical Intensive Care Unit for an extended period. After showing signs of clinical stability, he was shifted to the Medicine Ward on November 10, 2025. Although doctors had planned his discharge, it was delayed due to personal and family reasons.
On January 23, 2026, Majumdar developed a fresh infection accompanied by fever. Despite treatment as per standard medical protocols, his condition worsened and progressed to refractory septic shock. Hospital officials stated that he suffered cardiac arrest at 7:43 am on January 25, 2026. Resuscitation efforts were immediately initiated, but he was declared clinically dead at 9:02 am.
Majumdar had first fallen ill in late August 2025 and was initially treated at a private hospital in Cuttack before being shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. His demise has left the Odia music fraternity and fans deeply saddened.
