A major financial fraud has allegedly surfaced at theBaiganabadia Post Officeunder Jaleswar block in Balasore district of Odisha, where a postmaster is accused of misappropriating aroundRs 1.5 croredeposited by local residents.
According to initial allegations, the postmaster collected money from depositors butissued handwritten receipts instead of officially recording the transactionsin the post office’s financial records.
Sources saidhundreds of people, many from economically weaker sections, had deposited their savings at the post office, believing their money was secure under government-backed schemes.
The alleged fraud came to light when several depositors visited the post office towithdraw their savings, only to discover that the amounts hadnot been credited to their official accounts.
Preliminary estimates suggest thatnearly Rs 1.5 crore may have been misappropriatedthrough the suspected fraudulent activities.
Following the exposure of the alleged scam, the accused postmaster reportedlywent missing, further intensifying concerns among affected depositors.
The development triggeredpanic and anger among local residents, many of whom had invested their hard-earned savings in the post office schemes.
Demanding justice and recovery of their deposits, a large number of affected residentsstaged a protest outside the district head post office.
Protesters called forstrict action against the accused and immediate steps to recover the money.
