A first-year postgraduate student from the paediatrics department at VIMSAR Burla in Burla allegedly attempted suicide by consuming around 30 tablets.
The student is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU, and her condition is reported to be improving. Authorities stated that the exact reason behind the incident remains unclear and will be known only after her recovery.
Director-in-charge Dr Lal Mohan Naik indicated that excessive workload could be a possible factor, though no official confirmation has been made.
The Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) of VIMSAR raised serious concerns following the incident. Members visited the hospital, interacted with the student’s family, and convened an urgent meeting. They alleged excessive workload, lack of adequate rest, and denial of leave for resident doctors.
The association has demanded a time-bound and impartial inquiry, strict accountability, and implementation of reforms including mandatory rest periods, post-night duty breaks, and improved working conditions. They also called for a zero-tolerance policy towards workplace harassment and ragging.
The incident has reignited discussions around the mental and physical well-being of medical residents, with calls for systemic reforms to prevent such occurrences in the future.
