Indore, Madhya Pradesh | January 3, 2026— A severe outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea linked to contaminated drinking water has claimed six lives and left more than 200 people hospitalised in Indore, according to senior district officials.
Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava stated on Friday that preliminary reports indicated up to 10 deaths related to the outbreak. Meanwhile, residents of the Bhagirathpura locality alleged that the death toll could be as high as 16, including a six-month-old infant.
District Collector Shivam Verma confirmed that203 patients are currently receiving medical care across 41 hospitals in the city, with34 patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs)and under close medical supervision.
In response to the growing health emergency, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken strict administrative action. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered the transfer of Indore Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav and suspended two senior officials — Additional Municipal Commissioner Rohit Sissoniya and Public Health Engineering Department’s in-charge superintendent engineer Sanjeev Shrivastava.
According to a status report submitted by the state government to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, the diarrhoeal outbreak caused by the contaminated water supply is nowunder effective control. Authorities have implementedround-the-clock monitoringand intensified preventive measures to avoid any recurrence.
Health officials continue to investigate the source of contamination, while residents have been advised to consume only boiled or treated water until further notice.
