Operation ‘Cyber Kavach’: 15 Arrested in Rs 5.3 Crore Cyber Fraud Racket in Jharsuguda

Under Operation ‘Cyber Kavach’, Jharsuguda Police arrested 15 members of a cyber fraud gang allegedly involved in a Rs 5.3 crore scam using mule bank accounts. Multiple cases have been registered across police stations in Jharsuguda and Brajraj sub-divisions.

In a major crackdown on organised cybercrime, police in Jharsuguda district arrested 15 members of a cyber fraud network accused of siphoning off over Rs 5.3 crore through mule bank accounts.

The arrests were made on Thursday as part of a coordinated statewide initiative named ‘Cyber Kavach’, aimed at dismantling cybercrime syndicates and curbing financial fraud. The accused were apprehended from different police station jurisdictions across the district.

According to G.R. Raghavendra, Superintendent of Police (SP), Jharsuguda, six cases have been registered so far in connection with the fraud. In the Jharsuguda Sub-Division, cases were lodged at Jharsuguda Police Station, Airport Police Station, Sadar Police Station and Badmal Police Station. In the Brajraj Sub-Division, cases were registered at Belpahar and Lakhanpur police stations.

Of the 15 arrested, 13 are from the Jharsuguda Sub-Division and two from Lakhanpur. Additionally, notices have been served to five individuals in Belpahar. The approximate transaction amount involved in the fraud exceeds Rs 5 crore 30 lakh, with funds routed through multiple mule accounts.

Modus Operandi

Investigations revealed that the accused lured individuals with financial incentives to open bank accounts in their names. Once the accounts were created, the fraudsters took control of passbooks, ATM cards and SIM cards linked to those accounts.
