A major accident was narrowly avoided after an old canal bridge near Badapadar on the outskirts of Jeypore in Odisha collapsed on Saturday morning. Fortunately, no pedestrians or vehicles were on the bridge at the time, preventing any injuries or loss of life.
The collapsed bridge was one of the oldest structures maintained by the Odisha Irrigation Department. According to local residents, the bridge suddenly gave way, causing large pieces of concrete and debris to fall into the canal below.
The collapse has triggered concerns about the safety and maintenance of aging infrastructure in the region. Residents have demanded regular inspections and timely repairs to prevent such dangerous incidents in the future.
The incident has also disrupted connectivity for several villages under Bariniput Panchayat, affecting daily commuters, farmers, and students. People are now forced to use longer alternative routes, causing inconvenience.
Police from the local station reached the spot soon after the incident and are monitoring the situation. Authorities are expected to conduct a technical investigation to identify the cause and plan reconstruction.
