Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg on Wednesday reviewed the progress of the ambitious redevelopment of the Mahima temple at Joranda in Dhenkanal district, a project aimed at elevating the sacred Mahima Peetha into a prominent spiritual and cultural destination.
During the review meeting, officials discussed plans for constructing a grand temple structure that will integrate the existing Shunya Mandir, the core shrine of Mahima Dharma, while preserving its sanctity. The redesigned complex will also include allied structures such as the Akhanda Jyoti shrine, bhajan mandap, prayer hall and the pushkarini, or sacred temple pond, along with improved landscaping and eco-friendly features.
Originally approved in 2023 at an estimated cost of ₹112 crore by the previous BJD government, the project cost was revised to ₹171 crore by the BJP-led state government in June 2025 to include additional facilities and upgraded infrastructure. The redevelopment is scheduled to be completed within three years.
The review also covered plans for a modern kitchen, pilgrim rest houses and organised parking facilities to cater to the increasing number of devotees. Officials said the architectural plans were finalised after consultations with sadhus and followers of Mahima Dharma, in line with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s vision for inclusive and holistic development of the historic shrine.
