Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday laid the foundation stone and inaugurated three key industrial projects of Hindalco Industries Ltd in the Lapanga area of Sambalpur district, involving a total investment of around ₹25,500 crore.
The projects include a ₹21,000-crore expansion of Hindalco’s aluminium smelter, which will add 3.6 lakh tonnes per annum of production capacity, and a ₹4,500-crore flat rolled products (FRP) and battery-grade aluminium foil manufacturing facility with an annual capacity of 1.7 lakh tonnes.
Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi described the day as historic for Sambalpur and highlighted the role of industrialisation in boosting income, infrastructure, and employment for local youth. He urged Hindalco to prioritise hiring local, industry-ready candidates and reaffirmed the state government’s support for transparent CSR initiatives.
Hindalco Managing Director Satish Pai announced additional investments of ₹50,000 crore in Odisha and said upcoming projects would create around 15,000 new jobs. He also noted plans to add 300 MW of renewable energy capacity to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 30%.
The chief minister further revealed that Odisha is considering industrial proposals worth nearly ₹20 lakh crore, which could generate employment for over 15 lakh youth. He also announced plans to set up Odisha’s second World Skill Centre in Sambalpur after Bhubaneswar.
