The Gariaband district administration in Chhattisgarh has taken strict action following an allegedly obscene dance performance by Odia artiste Nisha Maharana at a Jatra event. The incident led to the arrest of 17 organisers, the transfer of a senior revenue official, and the suspension of three police personnel present during the performance.

The controversy erupted after a video of the performance, staged on January 9 during a Jatra organised by Odisha-based Banadurga Gananatya at Urmal, went viral on social media. The performance reportedly sparked a commotion due to the nature of the dance, prompting the District Collector to halt the programme on January 10.

Authorities took action against officials responsible for approving the event. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Tulsidas Markam was transferred for granting permission, while the Additional Superintendent of Police confirmed that the suspended police personnel were present during the incident.

Gariaband District Collector Bhagwan Singh Uikey stated that action was taken against those involved in the event, including officials who allowed it, and that further investigation is ongoing. Additional SP Dhirendra Patel said strict measures have been implemented to prevent such incidents in future cultural events, emphasizing that any officials involved in similar acts would face disciplinary action.

The incident has sparked widespread debate in Odisha over the appropriateness of obscene performances in Jatra shows and the accountability of organisers and authorities.
