Natalie Portman Calls Out Oscars for Overlooking Women Directors at 2026 Awards

Natalie Portman has criticised the Academy Awards for sidelining women directors in the 2026 Oscar nominations. Speaking at the Sundance Film Festival, the actor highlighted systemic barriers in the film industry, cited overlooked women-led films, and called the lack of recognition a recurring issue.

Actor and producer Natalie Portman has spoken out against the Academy Awards for failing to adequately recognise films directed by women in the 2026 Oscar nominations. Portman made the remarks during a press conference at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, where her latest filmThe Galleristpremiered.

Questioning the Oscars’ selection process, Portman said the exclusion of women-directed films reflects long-standing structural barriers within the film industry. She noted that despite widespread critical acclaim, many films helmed by women were absent from this year’s nominations.

Portman pointed out that only Chloé Zhao’sHamnetreceived significant recognition, earning eight nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. She argued that this singular success highlights how limited opportunities for recognition remain for women filmmakers overall.

According to Portman, the problem extends far beyond awards season. While entry-level barriers are often discussed, she said the imbalance becomes more visible when accolades are distributed, leaving many deserving voices unacknowledged. She cited films such asSorry Baby,Left-Handed Girl,Hedda, andThe Testament of Ann Leeas notable omissions.

During the same appearance, Portman also condemned the actions of ICE authorities following the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this month. She described the moment as emotionally conflicting, coming amid celebrations for her film’s premiere, and criticised what she termed the brutality of ICE.

Cathy Yan’sdark comedy thrillerThe Galleristfeatures an ensemble cast including Jenna Ortega, Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Portman serves as a producer on the project and is next set to star in and produce the upcoming filmGood Sex.
