Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has made explosive allegations against Muhammad Yunus, accusing the former interim administration chief of attempting to remove him from office and ignoring constitutional protocols. In an interview with Kaler Kontho, Shahabuddin said Yunus kept him uninformed about major government decisions, including a significant Bangladesh-US trade deal, and even blocked his foreign visits.
Yunus assumed leadership of the interim government in August 2024 after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime, serving as the de facto prime minister until February 2026. Shahabuddin claimed the interim government attempted to sideline him completely, including cancelling official foreign tours and not briefing him on key state matters.
The President also recalled a tense night when a mob surrounded the presidential residence demanding his removal, calling it a terrifying experience. He said he received strong support from the military leadership and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Despite earlier considering resignation, Shahabuddin’s recent statements suggest he may continue in office, with his tenure set to run until April 2028, depending on political support.
