A major fire erupted on Friday evening at a garbage heap in Goudabada Sahi, Puri district, Odisha, causing panic among nearby residents. Thick smoke from the blaze spread rapidly, forcing locals to struggle for fresh air and safety.
The Puri fire brigade rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control late at night. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, but residents faced significant discomfort due to the smoke and chaos. The fire reportedly originated near the city corporation’s garbage collection depot, where accumulated waste had formed a large mound.
Officials noted that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had previously directed the relocation of garbage heaps outside the city to prevent such hazards, but the orders remain unimplemented. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved waste management and stricter compliance with safety regulations. Authorities have urged residents to stay vigilant and assured enhanced monitoring to prevent similar fires in the future.
