Khokon Chandra Das, a Hindu businessman from Shariatpur district in Bangladesh, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning at the National Burn Institute in Dhaka, nearly three days after he was attacked by a mob. Hospital officials said Das died around 7:20 am after suffering severe burn injuries covering about 30 per cent of his body, including critical damage to his face and respiratory tract.
The attack occurred on December 31 near Keurbhanga Bazar in Damudya Upazila of Shariatpur district. According to local reports, Das was returning home after closing his pharmacy when he was stopped by a group of miscreants. He was allegedly stabbed with sharp weapons, doused with petrol and set on fire. In a desperate attempt to save himself, Das jumped into a nearby pond, while residents rushed to the scene after hearing his screams, forcing the attackers to flee.
Das was first taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for emergency treatment before being referred to Dhaka as his condition worsened. Doctors said he also suffered a serious abdominal wound along with burns to his face, head and hands.
Police have identified two suspects, both local residents, and say efforts are underway to arrest them and trace others involved. However, no arrests have been made yet. Das’s family has demanded a thorough investigation and swift justice, saying he had no known enmity and led a peaceful life.
The killing has intensified concerns over attacks on members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh, following a series of recent mob violence incidents that have drawn condemnation from political leaders, minority groups and rights organisations in both Bangladesh and India.
