Karan Johar opens up on breaking down while filming Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with Salman Khan

Karan Johar recalls his emotional first day directing Salman Khan on the set of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, offering a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes moments that contributed to the film’s lasting popularity and cultural impact.

Filmmaker Karan Johar recently reflected on his first experience directing Salman Khan during the making ofKuch Kuch Hota Hai, a film that continues to captivate audiences nearly 28 years after its release. Johar offered a behind-the-scenes look at the moments that shaped one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic films.

The director recalled the challenges of working with Salman, who was already a major star at the time. On his first day on set, Johar admitted to feeling anxious about managing expectations and ensuring the scenes met his vision. He revealed, in an emotional recount, why he “ended up crying” during the shoot.

Johar shared, “It was my first time working with Salman Khan, and I was… completely wound up because he was such a huge star. On his first day on set, I walked into his van. He was in a T-shirt and jeans. I said, ‘Salman, you know it’s a big set.’ And he replied, ‘Yes, but if for the first time a groom comes in jeans and a T-shirt, it will be a new style. I’ll bring the swag.’”

The director continued, “I got so hyped but also so stressed thinking, ‘If he comes in jeans and a T-shirt, what will happen?’ I ended up crying right there in his vanity van.” The situation was resolved when Salman, noticing Johar’s distress, reassured him: “No, no, I’ll wear the suit.” This allowed the first Sangeet sequence to be shot as envisioned, maintaining the film’s intended aesthetic.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hairemains celebrated for its memorable sequences featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji, along with Salman Khan’s cameo. Its songs and iconic pairings have made it a staple of Hindi cinema, frequently revisited at social gatherings and celebrations.

In October last year, Johar commemorated the film’s 27th anniversary with a heartfelt note: “27 years!!! Some beautiful and candid memories from our set of #KuchKuchHotaHai… a set filled with love, too much banter and happiness. Thank you to everyone for the love you continue to give to this film… it means everything to me!”

Johar also shared behind-the-scenes glimpses, including Farah Khan choreographingKoi Mil Gaya, the emotional wedding sequences, and candid interactions among the cast. These anecdotes highlight not only the film’s enduring appeal but also the warmth, fun, and dedication that defined its production.
