According to a report by Page Six, Depp and Dane had developed a close bond over the years through mutual acquaintances. When Dane’s health declined, the Pirates of the Caribbean star is said to have offered him a sanctuary above the Sunset Strip, telling him to pay whatever he could — or couldn’t — for rent. The gesture was reportedly aimed at easing Dane’s financial burden so he could focus solely on his treatment and well-being.
Dane passed away on Thursday at the age of 53, following a ten-month battle with ALS — also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease — a progressive neurodegenerative condition that gradually paralyzes muscles. His family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement to People, sharing that he spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and daughters, Billie and Georgia.
“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research,” the family shared, highlighting his determination to help others facing similar struggles.
