Odisha rings in the New Year as Bhubaneswar clocks ₹32 crore in liquor sales in a week

In the final week of 2025, liquor sales in the city surged, with nearly 2.5 lakh litres of foreign liquor and 1.5 lakh litres of country liquor sold. Beer consumption also saw a sharp increase.

New Year celebrations in Odisha’s capital led to record-breaking liquor sales, with Bhubaneswar registering transactions worth over ₹32 crore in just one week, according to official data released by the Excise Department.

During the final week of 2025, the city saw the sale of nearly 2.5 lakh litres of foreign liquor and around 1.5 lakh litres of country liquor. Beer consumption also witnessed a sharp surge, with approximately 1.78 lakh litres sold during the same period.

Christmas to Zero Night Rush

Officials noted that liquor sales peaked between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, popularly known as Zero Night. Clubs, pubs, bars and off-shops across the city reported heavy footfall as revellers stocked up on alcohol to ring in the New Year.

Break-up of Sales Figures

Between December 25 and December 31, foreign liquor sales alone accounted for ₹28.04 crore. Beer contributed ₹3.56 crore to the total revenue, while country liquor sales amounted to ₹94.20 lakh. Overall, liquor sales during the festive week touched ₹32.55 crore.

The figures highlight the scale of New Year festivities in Bhubaneswar and reflect a significant spike in alcohol consumption during the holiday season. Data from the Excise Department further indicates that major celebrations continue to drive substantial revenue generation in the capital year after year.
