In a major step to bolster digital safety, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed all mobile phone manufacturers to pre-install the cyber security application Sanchar Saathi on every new smartphone. The directive aims to curb cyber fraud, prevent mobile theft and tackle the issue of fake IMEI numbers, thereby ensuring stronger protection for mobile users nationwide.
According to the order, the Sanchar Saathi app must be integrated into every device at the manufacturing stage. Manufacturers have also been instructed that the app cannot be deleted or uninstalled under any circumstances. The DoT has granted companies 90 days to comply with the mandate. In addition, the app will be rolled out to older smartphones through a software update so that existing users also gain access to the security tool.
Reports indicate that the Sanchar Saathi application will play a key role in preventing fake IMEI scams, cyber fraud and mobile phone theft, which continue to affect millions of users across the country. The DoT has asked all manufacturers to strictly adhere to the guidelines and submit their compliance reports within 120 days.
Sanchar Saathi is a government-developed cyber security platform that helps track lost or stolen mobile phones and detect fraudulent IMEI numbers. According to official data, the app has already facilitated the recovery of more than 7 lakh stolen devices. With mandatory installation on all new smartphones, authorities expect a more coordinated and effective response against cyber-related crimes.
The compulsory pre-installation marks a significant shift in India’s digital safety framework, ensuring that essential cyber protection tools are accessible to all users from the moment their device is activated, sources said.
