The Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes on Friday as opposition members staged protests over farmers’ issues, leading to the adjournment of proceedings shortly after the House convened.
As the session began, legislators from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress rushed into the well of the House, holding placards and raising slogans over alleged concerns affecting farmers across the state. Despite repeated appeals from Speaker Surama Padhy to maintain decorum and allow Question Hour to proceed, the protesting members refused to return to their seats.
Amid the uproar, the Assembly functioned for barely six minutes before being adjourned till 11:30 am.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the opposition for disrupting legislative proceedings. BJP leaders stated that the government was ready to hold a structured discussion on farmers’ issues within the House but alleged that the opposition preferred protest over debate.
The disruption comes at a crucial time, as the State Budget for the financial year 2026–27 is scheduled to be presented later in the day.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is slated to table the annual budget in the Assembly during the post-lunch session.
