The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is witnessing a series of resignations in Balasore district days after senior leader Rabindra Kumar Jena quit the party. The developments have raised concerns about the party’s organisational strength in the region.
In the latest development, Sunita Behera, Chairperson of Balasore Sadar Block, announced her resignation from the BJD. Her decision comes shortly after another local leader from the district stepped down.
Speaking after her resignation, Behera said she and several other leaders had sought an appointment with BJD president Naveen Patnaik but were not given an opportunity to meet him.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the party leadership, she alleged that leaders who lost elections by large margins were being given importance while grassroots leaders were being ignored.
Earlier, Anjali Das, Chairperson of Basta Block, also resigned from the party. She had been elected to the post during the 2022 Panchayat elections.
Das said she decided to step down due to what she described as continued neglect of local leaders within the party.
“We were being ignored and our opinions were not considered. No one consults us before making decisions. The party has also not been able to elect a district president,” she said.
She further stated that Rabindra Kumar Jena had been a key leader for many in the district, and several members had stayed with the party because of him. Following his resignation earlier this week, some leaders decided to step down as well.
With multiple leaders resigning within a short period, the developments have drawn attention to the internal situation of the Biju Janata Dal in Balasore district, where the party appears to be facing organisational challenges.
