Bangladesh Seeks Neutral Venue for T20 World Cup 2026 Matches After Mustafizur IPL Exit
Bangladesh is exploring the possibility of playing its ICC T20 World Cup 2026 fixtures outside India following the sudden release of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL. The country’s interim government has directed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to formally approach the ICC about relocating their matches, citing concerns over player dignity and security.
Sports adviser Asif Nazrul confirmed the development on social media, saying the issue gained urgency after Mustafizur was released by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Sri Lanka has emerged as the preferred alternative venue for Bangladesh’s matches.
Sources revealed that the matter was discussed in an emergency BCB meeting. The release of Mustafizur, who was signed for INR 9.20 crore, reportedly followed instructions from the BCCI after social media backlash regarding a Bangladeshi player participating amid political tensions.
Nazrul criticised the decision, calling it an insult to Bangladesh cricket and alleging undue influence from extremist groups. “If Bangladeshi players are not allowed to play in India despite having valid contracts, we cannot risk sending our team there for the World Cup,” he said, adding that the BCB has been asked to formally write to the ICC.
He further announced that IPL matches will no longer be broadcast in Bangladesh, emphasizing that the country will not tolerate what he termed humiliation of its players or cricketing identity.
BCB president Aminul Islam also confirmed the board’s intent to raise the matter with the ICC, stating that while India is the host nation, Bangladesh’s concerns regarding player safety must be addressed.
