At least 12 Maoists were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The operation was launched late Friday night by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) Sukma following intelligence inputs about the presence of Maoist cadres. Teams moved out from the Palodi and Potakpalli areas under Kistaram police station limits, with the encounter breaking out near Pamlur village in the Kistaram region.
During the exchange of fire, security forces neutralised 12 Naxal cadres. Among those killed was Mangdu, identified as the secretary of the Konta Area Committee, a senior position within the Maoist hierarchy. The identities of the remaining slain Maoists are yet to be confirmed.
Security personnel recovered automatic weapons, including AK-47 and INSAS rifles, from the encounter site, indicating the scale and preparedness of the armed group. Officials said the entire operation was closely monitored by Kiran Chavan, Superintendent of Police, Sukma. Further details are awaited as search operations continue in the surrounding forested areas.
Earlier the same day, two Maoists were killed in a separate encounter with security forces in Bijapur district. That gun battle began around 5 am when a DRG team launched an anti-Naxal operation based on specific intelligence inputs. Officials said intermittent firing was still underway in the area.
Chhattisgarh has witnessed sustained anti-Naxal operations over the past year. According to official data, 285 Maoists were killed in encounters in the state last year, with 257 neutralised in the Bastar division, which includes districts such as Sukma and Bijapur, while 27 others were killed in Gariaband district of the Raipur division.
