Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has reacted to reports linking his name to documents connected with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. The director clarified in a recent interview that the reference was insignificant and did not directly involve him.
The controversy emerged after the United States Department of Justice released additional records related to Epstein that listed hundreds of political, business and cultural figures who appeared in various documents or communications connected to the investigation.
Speaking during an episode ofSit with Hitlist, Kashyap explained that the mention could simply relate to random invitations or communications that public figures often receive. He dismissed the speculation and joked about finding himself listed among a large group of global personalities.
Kashyap also addressed the 2021 Income Tax raid at his residence, explaining that it was linked to financial matters involving his former production company Phantom Films. The banner, co-founded by Kashyap along with Vikramaditya Motwane, Madhu Mantena and Vikas Bahl, was dissolved in 2018 after seven years of collaboration.
Founded in 2011, Phantom Films produced several acclaimed Bollywood movies includingQueen,Masaan,LooteraandUdta Punjab. Kashyap clarified that the tax inquiry largely revolved around valuation and financial distribution issues following the company’s breakup.
The newly released Epstein files include a vast collection of court documents, emails, flight logs and testimonies that shed light on Epstein’s network of associates across politics, business, academia and entertainment, many of whom were mentioned in records without direct allegations of wrongdoing.
