Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a sharp attack on the opposition INDIA Alliance during a heated debate in the Lok Sabha over the no-trust motion against Speaker Om Birla.
Speaking in Parliament, Shah criticised the opposition for questioning the integrity of the Speaker, saying that such a move undermines the foundations of Indian democracy. Using a strong metaphor, he said that by bringing the motion, the opposition had pushed the democratic structure deeper than “paatal”.
The no-trust motion was introduced by opposition leaders who accused the Speaker of showing partiality in the House. They alleged that opposition microphones were often switched off and that disciplinary actions, including suspensions, disproportionately targeted opposition MPs. In contrast, leaders from the ruling National Democratic Alliance defended Birla, highlighting that several important legislations were passed during his tenure.
During his speech, Shah also targeted Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, questioning his attendance in Parliament and accusing him of frequently travelling abroad instead of participating in key debates. Shah rejected Gandhi’s claims that he was prevented from speaking in the House.
The remarks triggered protests from opposition members, including KC Venugopal, who objected to Shah’s comments and asked whether the motion was against Om Birla or Rahul Gandhi. Despite the disruptions, Shah continued his speech and urged MPs to maintain decorum, warning against turning Parliament into a “fish market”.
