Concerns are rising over alleged poaching of foreign migratory birds at Chilika Lake in Odisha, one of Asia’s largest brackish water lagoons and a major habitat for seasonal birds. The illegal hunting is reportedly taking place in the Budhibar Diakuda area under the Balugaon Nuapada range, where poachers are said to be using nets and snares to trap birds.
Sources claim that many traps have been laid, particularly around illegal prawn enclosures, leading to birds getting caught and dying frequently. Visual evidence from the area allegedly shows trapped birds struggling to escape, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The reports have triggered anger among local residents and wildlife lovers, who have demanded immediate intervention and stricter monitoring to protect the migratory species. Although suspicions have been raised about possible local involvement, no official confirmation has been made so far. Authorities from the wildlife forest division are yet to issue an official response regarding the alleged poaching activities.
