Agnivesh Agarwal, son of Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, passed away at the age of 49 on Wednesday following a cardiac arrest at a New York hospital. The tragedy occurred while he was recovering from injuries sustained in a skiing accident in the United States.
In an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter), Anil Agarwal said his son had been convalescing at Mount Sinai Hospital and was believed to be on the path to recovery. “We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us,” he wrote, describing the day as the darkest of his life.
A Life of Achievement and SimplicityBorn in Patna on June 3, 1976, Agnivesh studied at Mayo College, Ajmer. He went on to establish Fujeirah Gold and later served as Chairman of Hindustan Zinc. Remembering his son’s journey, Agarwal described Agnivesh as a sportsman, musician, and respected leader who remained humble and warm.
“To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world,” Agarwal added, expressing the deep grief shared with his wife Kiran.
Commitment to Social CausesThe Vedanta Group chairman also recalled a shared vision with his son to focus on social priorities such as food security, children’s education, women’s empowerment, and employment for youth. He reaffirmed his commitment to dedicate over 75% of the group’s earnings to initiatives benefiting society.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and his wife expressed condolences, saying they were heartbroken by Agnivesh’s passing. “May God provide you and your family the strength to bear this unimaginable loss,” Rijiju wrote on X.
The news has drawn widespread tributes from business leaders, colleagues, and well-wishers across the country.
