A pall of gloom descended over Sunari Sahi in Jeypore town of Odisha’s Koraput district after a mother and her son passed away within a few hours of each other on Tuesday, triggering widespread grief in the neighbourhood.
According to sources, the elderly woman, identified as Shibani, had been unwell for nearly a week and died in the early hours of the day. Despite her age and illness, she was managing household responsibilities and also caring for her mentally challenged daughter at their residence.
After his mother’s death, Shibani’s son informed neighbours and relatives about the loss. However, a few hours later, he reportedly collapsed inside the house. He was rushed for medical treatment but doctors declared him dead, citing cardiac arrest as the cause.
The sudden and consecutive deaths of the mother and son have plunged the family and the entire locality into deep sorrow.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised over the future care of Shibani’s mentally challenged daughter, who has been left without her primary caregivers. Relatives and local residents have begun discussions to make appropriate arrangements to ensure her safety, care, and well-being.
