Key Eyewitness Testimony Re-Recorded in Swami Lakshmanananda Murder Case After 17 Years

A key eyewitness in the Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati murder case recorded his testimony again on Sunday, highlighting serious concerns over delays in justice. Even after 17 years, the main accused remains unpunished, raising fresh questions about lapses in investigation and trial.

The testimony of a crucial eyewitness in the Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati murder case was re-recorded on Sunday, more than 17 years after the incident, as the main accused continues to remain unpunished. Swami Madhab Chaitanya, regarded as a key eyewitness, appeared before the court and recorded his statement. His testimony had earlier been taken through video conferencing at the Malkangiri court in Odisha.

Expressing strong concern over the prolonged delay in delivering justice, Swami Madhab Chaitanya alleged serious lapses in both the investigation and judicial process. He pointed out that no test identification parade has been conducted even after 17 years, while the prime accused and key conspirators are moving freely, some having been granted bail. He further claimed that the three commissions constituted by the Crime Branch to probe the case have yielded no tangible outcome.

The murder occurred on August 23, 2008, when Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati and four of his followers were brutally killed. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and led to significant political consequences in Odisha, including the breakup of the BJP–BJD alliance after BJD president Naveen Patnaik withdrew support from the BJP.

The killing was followed by nearly a month of widespread violence, resulting in at least 38 deaths. The case was initially investigated by the Crime Branch and later examined by multiple commissions, including the Panigrahi Commission, the Justice Sarat Chandra Mohapatra Commission, and the Justice A.S. Naidu Commission constituted in 2012. Although the Justice Naidu Commission submitted its report to the then BJD government, the findings were never made public.

The fresh recording of the eyewitness testimony has once again brought attention to the prolonged judicial process and the lack of closure in one of Odisha’s most sensitive criminal cases.
