A day after Singapore’s coroner’s court revealed that music icon Zubeen Garg was “severely intoxicated” prior to his drowning near Lazarus Island, his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, made a strong appeal to both the Indian central government and the Assam state government to closely monitor the proceedings at the highest level. She emphasized the need for robust diplomatic and legal intervention to ensure that all facts are thoroughly presented before the court and that justice is pursued in India based on the chargesheet filed by the Assam Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Garima highlighted several unanswered questions that continue to trouble the family, including the planning and circumstances of the outing, Garg’s medical condition, the safety measures on the yacht, and the exact sequence of events leading to his entry into the sea. The family also raised concerns about the actions of those present when Garg appeared to be in distress, the timing and adequacy of medical aid, and the coroner’s initial finding of “no foul play.” She asserted, “Our family will not hesitate or compromise in the pursuit of truth,” adding that Zubeen Garg was not only a beloved member of their family but also a cultural icon for Assam and its people.

The case has already taken a serious turn in India. The Assam SIT has arrested seven individuals in connection with Garg’s death and filed charges against four, including North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, under murder allegations. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, however, declined to comment on the developments in Singapore, leaving the family to urge government intervention to ensure the case is closely tracked and justice is served.

This latest appeal by the family underscores the growing concern over the handling of the high-profile case, reflecting their determination to pursue accountability and transparency at both legal and diplomatic levels while seeking closure for the tragic death of one of Assam’s most celebrated cultural figures.
