With an estimated 3.5 to 4 lakh devotees expected to visit the Shree Jagannath Temple during the period, authorities have put in place extensive measures to manage the large influx of pilgrims and tourists

With the New Year drawing close, the Odisha Police have stepped up preparations to ensure a safe, peaceful and well-organised observance of New Year 2026 in Puri. The DIG, Central Range (CR) conducted a detailed review meeting with senior police officers of Puri district to assess and fine-tune security arrangements for December 31, 2025 and January 1, 2026.

The review focused on comprehensive security, traffic management, crowd control and emergency preparedness, with special emphasis on Puri town, the Shree Jagannath Temple and the sea beach areas. With an estimated 3.5 to 4 lakh devotees expected to visit the Shree Jagannath Temple during the period, authorities have put in place extensive measures to manage the large influx of pilgrims and tourists.

Massive Police Deployment and Surveillance

To ensure smooth crowd regulation, as many as 60 police platoons have been deployed, supported by 10 additional SPs, 33 DSPs, 62 Inspectors and 245 Sub-Inspectors. The deployment plan also includes lifeguards, ODRAF and STF units to respond swiftly to any emergencies.

CCTV surveillance systems and control rooms will remain operational from December 29, 2025 to January 1, 2026, enabling real-time monitoring of sensitive and high-footfall locations.

Traffic, Parking and Preventive Measures

Special traffic and parking plans have been drawn up, with multiple parking locations and contingency arrangements to avoid congestion. Barricades and public address systems have been installed to ensure orderly entry into the temple and effective crowd communication.

Preventive actions, including NSA measures against anti-social elements and seizure of contraband, are also being undertaken.

Public Appeal

Odisha Police have appealed to devotees, tourists and local residents to cooperate with authorities, follow advisories and celebrate responsibly, reiterating that public safety and security remain the top priority.
