Why Using Anti-Dandruff Shampoo on Your Face Can Harm Your Skin

A viral social media trend encouraging people to wash their faces with anti-dandruff shampoo may damage delicate facial skin. Dermatologists warn it can cause dryness, irritation, and worsen acne.

A recent social media trend has encouraged people across India and beyond to wash their faces with anti-dandruff shampoo, claiming it can clear acne, control oil, and reduce dark spots. While the idea may seem appealing, dermatologists caution that this hack can do more harm than good. Facial skin is far more sensitive than scalp skin, and using products formulated for thicker scalp skin can strip natural oils, disrupt the skin barrier, and trigger redness, irritation, or even breakouts.

Dr Vikram Sinha, Senior Consultant Dermatologist with over 20 years of experience, explains that anti-dandruff shampoos contain active ingredients like zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, and salicylic acid, which are effective for the scalp but too harsh for the delicate facial skin. Misuse, over-application, or leaving the product on the face for longer than intended increases the risk of inflammation and micro-tears, potentially worsening acne and other skin issues.

Dermatologists recommend turning to products specifically designed for facial care. Ingredients such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid are safe for acne-prone and oily skin. Consulting a dermatologist ensures a routine tailored to your skin type, avoiding over-cleansing and product misuse.

The trend highlights a broader issue: social media often promotes beauty hacks without explaining differences in skin types or long-term consequences. Dr Sinha emphasizes that viral trends are not a substitute for science-backed skincare. Maintaining healthy skin requires gentle cleansing, proper moisturisation, and evidence-based treatments rather than experimenting with scalp-specific products on the face.
