Many Indians believe that owning a life insurance policy means their family is financially protected. In reality, a large number of these policies offer very little actual life cover. Money-back and endowment plans, though popular for their guaranteed returns and periodic payouts, prioritise savings over protection, leaving families severely underinsured.
Experts highlight that India faces one of the world’s largest life insurance protection gaps. While insurance penetration has increased, the average sum assured remains far below what is required to replace income, service loans, and meet long-term responsibilities like children’s education and retirement needs.
Financial advisers stress that true protection begins with adequate life cover—typically 15 to 20 times annual income—which is best achieved through term insurance. Unlike traditional plans, term insurance focuses purely on risk coverage, offering higher protection at a fraction of the cost.
The real danger of underinsurance lies in its invisibility. Families often realise the gap only after a loss, when policy payouts fall short of sustaining their lifestyle. Bridging this gap requires rethinking insurance as protection first, savings second—and making term insurance the foundation of financial security.
