Anup Jalota reacts to AR Rahman’s work lull comments, sparks controversy with conversion remark

Veteran singer Anup Jalota has stirred controversy after responding to AR Rahman’s remarks about reduced work opportunities in Bollywood, suggesting the composer convert back to Hinduism, a comment that has drawn sharp reactions.

Veteran devotional singer Anup Jalota has weighed in on the debate surrounding AR Rahman’s recent comments about experiencing fewer opportunities in the Hindi film industry over the past eight years, attributing the situation to a shift in power within the industry and possible communal bias.

The discussion began after the Oscar-winning composer, in an interview with BBC Asian Network, spoke about a noticeable decline in work. Rahman suggested that changes in industry leadership may have impacted creative professionals and hinted that religion could be a factor, though he clarified that any bias was not openly expressed and often surfaced indirectly.

Reacting to Rahman’s remarks, Jalota released a video message in Hindi that quickly became controversial. In the video, Jalota stated that Rahman was born a Hindu and later converted to Islam, adding that if Rahman believes religion is affecting his career, he should consider converting back to Hinduism. Jalota claimed this could restore Rahman’s confidence and potentially improve his professional prospects.

The statement has triggered widespread debate on social media and within the film fraternity, drawing both criticism and support. Many have questioned the appropriateness of linking artistic opportunities to religious identity, while others defended Jalota’s comments as a personal interpretation of Rahman’s interview.

In the same BBC interview, Rahman also described his filmChhaavaas “divisive,” stating that while the film showcased bravery, it also relied on polarising themes. He added that audiences are intelligent enough to distinguish between storytelling and manipulation.

Several celebrities have since responded to the controversy. Actor Kangana Ranaut criticised Rahman’s remarks, while singer Shaan suggested that phases of limited work are common in creative careers and should not be viewed through a religious lens.

As the debate continues, the episode has reignited conversations around artistic freedom, industry politics, and the role of religion in India’s entertainment ecosystem.
