Pakistan’s emerging spinner Usman Tariq has revealed the inspiration behind his remarkable return to cricket, citing the 2016 MS Dhoni biopic as a key motivator. Before making his T20I debut in 2025, Tariq was working as a purchase coordinator in a Dubai real estate firm. Watching Dhoni’s journey—from a ticket checker in the Indian Railways to one of the greatest captains in cricket—struck a chord with Tariq.
“I felt a connection to Dhoni’s story because I was also working a job, and he was too,” Tariq said. “He created history, and I felt that if he could do it, maybe I could as well. But for that, I would have to work very hard.”
Since returning to the sport, Tariq has been a revelation for Pakistan. In five T20Is leading up to the 2026 T20 World Cup, he picked up 12 wickets at an impressive average of 9.25 and an economy rate of 5.94. In the World Cup, he has already claimed four wickets in two matches.
Speaking ahead of the India vs Pakistan clash, Tariq admitted that while he bowled well, he felt he could have performed better. “Honestly, I saw it as a big opportunity to make a name for myself. I tried my best, but personally, I feel I wasn’t up to the mark the way I should have been. Hopefully, if I get another chance, I’ll do much better than I did in the last game,” he said.
Tariq also emphasized Pakistan’s collective goal: winning the T20 World Cup. As the young spinner continues to develop, his unique bowling style and determination have made him a key asset for the team, and fans are eagerly watching his journey in the 2026 tournament.
