US Trade Chief Says India Benefits Most From Landmark EU-India Free Trade Deal

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has said India stands to gain the most from the newly finalised EU-India Free Trade Agreement, citing wider market access, potential immigration benefits, and low-cost labour advantages. The deal, termed the “mother of all deals,” eliminates tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the EU.

The United States’ top trade official, Jamieson Greer, has highlighted that India is set to gain significantly from the historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed with the European Union. Speaking to Fox Business, Greer observed that the agreement appears to tilt in New Delhi’s favour by granting greater access to European markets and potentially offering mobility for Indian workers.

The EU-India FTA, often described as the “mother of all deals,” creates a combined market of nearly two billion people and outlines a transformative five-year agenda on trade and defence cooperation. The pact will eliminate tariffs on 99% of Indian exports to the EU and reduce duties on over 97% of EU goods entering India, covering key sectors like agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing.

Greer also noted that the deal comes at a time when the United States is pursuing restrictive trade policies and prioritising domestic manufacturing. As a result, the European Union is seeking alternative markets for its exports, turning to India, which benefits from low-cost labour and a strategic position in global trade.

He remarked, “I think India comes out on top on this, frankly… on net, India is going to have a heyday with this.” The agreement is expected to strengthen India-EU economic ties while creating opportunities for Indian exporters and professionals in the coming years.
