Two bodies were recovered from the Birupa River near the Birupa Barrage in Choudwar on Thursday after local residents spotted them floating in the water and informed the police.
Following the alert, personnel from the Fire Services department reached the spot and retrieved the bodies from the river. Police officials also arrived at the location and began an investigation into the incident.
Initially, the identities of the deceased were unknown. However, during preliminary inquiries, local residents identified the bodies as Debasish Sahoo and Subhasish Sahoo, two brothers from Mandapada village.
Residents said the brothers had reportedly left the village around a year ago and their whereabouts were not known during that period. A motorcycle believed to belong to the two brothers was reportedly found parked near the Birupa River two days before the bodies were discovered. As no one came forward to claim the vehicle, police later took it into custody.
The exact cause of the deaths remains unclear. Police are investigating whether the case involves suicide or any foul play. Some locals claimed that the bodies were found in a position suggesting that the brothers might have been holding each other, raising suspicions that it could be a suicide pact.
However, officials have not confirmed any theory and said further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
