Shock and outrage gripped Bhishmagiri village under Digapahandi block in Odisha’s Ganjam district after the body of a newborn baby girl was found floating in a pond on Tuesday morning. Villagers spotted the infant’s body in a large pond locally known as Badabandha and immediately informed the police.
Police reached the spot and recovered the body in the presence of local residents. Preliminary investigation suggests that the newborn may have been dumped into the pond during the late hours of the night by unidentified persons. Authorities suspect foul play, including the possibility of infanticide, though the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine whether the child was born alive and to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. A case has been registered, and police are questioning local residents to identify those responsible. The incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of female infanticide and abandonment of newborns despite legal safeguards and awareness efforts.
