Even before voting begins, the Mahayuti alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, has gained a decisive early advantage in the Maharashtra civic elections, with 68 candidates declared elected unopposed.
The development followed the closure of the nomination withdrawal window on Friday, when several opposition candidates pulled out, clearing the way for uncontested victories across multiple urban local bodies. Polling for municipal corporations and councils across the state is scheduled for January 15, with counting to take place the following day.
Of the 68 unopposed seats, the BJP accounted for 44 victories, with the largest number coming from the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation in Thane district. Additional unopposed wins were recorded in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, Panvel, Bhiwandi, Dhule, Jalgaon and Ahilyanagar.
Alliance partners also benefitted from the withdrawals. The Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, secured 22 unopposed seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party won two seats without contest.
In Pune, BJP candidates Manjusha Nagpure and Shrikant Jagtap were elected unopposed from Ward No. 35 after rival candidates withdrew. Both had previously represented the ward during the 2017–2022 term.
Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol said the unopposed wins reflected the BJP’s governance record and expressed confidence that the next mayor of Pune would be from the party. BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said the results highlighted the party’s growing influence in urban civic bodies.
Party leaders credited the trend to the popularity of Devendra Fadnavis and the organisational strategy led by state BJP president Ravindra Chavan.
However, the developments drew sharp criticism from the Shiv Sena. MP Priyanka Chaturvedi alleged that democracy was being undermined, accusing the ruling alliance of pressuring opposition candidates through central agencies or inducements. She also criticised the Election Commission for remaining silent on the issue.
Elections will be held for 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including the politically significant Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), making the outcome crucial for all major political players in the state.
