"Mamata vs ED: Confrontation Politics Erupts on Kolkata Streets"

On January 8, Kolkata witnessed a dramatic escalation of political tensions as Chief MinisterMamata Banerjeearrived unannounced at the center of anEnforcement Directorate (ED)operation, transforming routine raids into a street-level confrontation.

ED teams conducted searches across multiple locations in Kolkata and Bidhannagar, including the11th-floor office of political consultancy I-PACin Salt Lake, the Loudon Street residence of its headPratik Jain, and the Posta office of a local trader. The raids were part of amoney-laundering investigation linked to illegal coal smugglingby a syndicate led by Anup Majee, which allegedly funneled coal to factories in Bankura, Bardhaman, Purulia, and other districts. ED officials said evidence pointed to hawala transactions involvingI-PAC, though they stressed that no political party office was being targeted and that the searches were unrelated to elections.

Hours into the operation, Mamata arrived at Loudon Street and the I-PAC office, claiming the ED attempted to seizeTrinamool Congress (TMC) documents, hard disks, and internal party data. She accused the central government of using agencies to interfere in elections and alleged that theSpecial Intensive Revision (SIR)was being used to delete voters’ names. Mamata announced protest marches across West Bengal and vowed to defend her party’s documents, calling the ED action “an insult to the IT sector” and accusing the BJP of politicizing the investigation.

TheBJP and ED offered a contrasting account, alleging that Mamata and her aidesforcibly removed evidence, obstructing an ongoing probe under thePrevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Party leaders called her intervention unconstitutional and claimed the raids were strictly evidence-based.

The confrontation in Kolkata mirrored past standoffs between the TMC and central agencies, but this time the fault lines were digital and documentary. Both sides accused each other of undermining democracy, as the investigation continued amid high political drama.
