A catastrophic fire that broke out during New Year’s Eve celebrations at Le Constellation bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana was likely caused by “fountain candles” or Bengal lights, Swiss authorities said. According to Valais prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud, the sparkler-style candles attached to champagne bottles may have been carried too close to the ceiling, igniting the blaze that spread with alarming speed.
The fire left at least 47 people dead and more than 100 injured, with dozens suffering severe burns. Investigators are also examining whether insulation foam in the ceiling contributed to the rapid spread and intensity of the flames. While the Bengal lights theory is considered the most likely cause, officials said the investigation is still ongoing and criminal liability for negligence has not been ruled out.
Authorities warned that identifying all victims would take time due to the extent of the injuries. Around 50 injured people have been transferred or are being transferred to specialised burn units across Europe, including hospitals in France and Germany. Police have so far identified 113 injured individuals, including nationals from Switzerland, France, Italy, Serbia and several other European countries.
Survivors described scenes of chaos and desperation as smoke filled the venue and exits became dangerously crowded. Families of missing youths gathered near the sealed-off bar, while embassies worked to trace their citizens. Floral tributes and candles were placed outside the site as residents and visitors mourned the victims of the tragedy.
The disaster has sparked renewed scrutiny of safety practices in crowded nightlife venues, particularly the use of pyrotechnic party accessories indoors, as Switzerland grapples with the scale of the loss.
