The past few months have been emotionally challenging for the Deol family. Legendary superstar Dharmendra passed away in November after several weeks of hospitalization. As his sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, continue to process the loss while focusing on upcoming projects, Sunny recently spoke about his father’s enduring influence on his life and career.
At the launch of the song“Ghar Kab Aaoge”from his upcoming war dramaBorder 2, held at Longewala in Jaisalmer in the presence of BSF jawans, Sunny Deol was visibly emotional. Reflecting on his father’s impact, he shared how Dharmendra’s iconic filmHaqeeqatinspired him to take on a film likeBorderin 1997. In a clip shared by ANI, Sunny said:
“I didBorderbecause when I watched my father’s filmHaqeeqat, I loved it deeply. I was very young then. And when I became an actor, I decided that I too would do a film like my father’s. I spoke to JP Dutta saab, and we both decided to make a film on the Longewala subject, one that is very dear and now lives in everyone’s hearts.”
Clearly overwhelmed, Sunny added, “Aur aab main zyada kuch keh nahi paunga kyunki thoda mera dimaag hila hua hai.” (And now I won’t be able to say much more because my mind is a bit shaken.) He also thanked the jawans for making him feel like part of their family ever sinceBorderwas released and acknowledged the film’s role in inspiring countless young Indians to join the armed forces.
Just days earlier, Sunny attended the premiere of his father’s final release,Ikkis, a war drama based on the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Paparazzi footage showed him visibly moved as he posed in front of his father’s poster and shared moments with Salman Khan, who attended the screening.
On Instagram, Sunny shared a heartfelt post on the occasion ofIkkis’ release:
“Our Papa, the man of the soil,Ikkisis his salute, his gift to the earth he loved and to the fans who always stood by him. For our family, it is a treasure filled with his spirit, courage, and his heart. Today, with love and immense pride, we share it with the world, hoping it lives on the way he does, forever.”
